[Day 4] I learned this expensive lesson after wrecking my server

WordPress.com

Hi kzhunadia170zdthxzdfth,

On a hot summer day 12 years ago, I accidentally destroyed the server that hosted my business's website.

My site was down, I had no idea how to fix it, and I was in total panic mode.

Here's how it all went down...

The morning started great. I had my coffee and an English muffin. The radio was on, sunlight filled the room, and I was ready for work.

On my to-do list was a task that seemed simple enough: "Update PHP to latest version."

(PHP is a programming language that runs a lot of web software, including WordPress.)

I'm not a techie, but I'd learned just enough about servers to feel comfortable doing it. I'd just look up the instructions with a few Google searches. How hard could that be, right?

Or so I thought...

After I read a few articles, I followed the directions in the best tutorial I found.

I cut and paste the commands from the article (commands that I didn't fully understand), and the software update seemed to run fine.

But then strange errors started popping up on the site.

I spent the next two hours trying to fix those errors, and it was a complete disaster.

I broke something new every step of the way...

By the time I stood up and walked away from my desk, the site was a wreck. Nothing worked. I was losing money every minute the site was down, and I didn't know what to do.

The business was my only source of income. I depended on that site to pay my rent, my food bills, and everything else, so I was desperate to get it back online.

Which meant I had no choice but to call an emergency crew of "hired gun" server experts to fix everything I'd broken. And believe me, they weren't cheap.

I learned that day that the quality of your server will make or break your site.

And most people don't even think about server quality when choosing their website host.

That's a huge mistake!

If you're on a bad server, your site doesn't have a chance of becoming popular.

Even if your site looks great and has amazing content, Google won't rank it, and people won't stick around to read it.

Think about it like this:

Have you ever clicked a link to a site that took forever to load? How did it make you feel, and what did you do?

I'm guessing it annoyed you. And if it took longer than about 7 seconds to load, you probably hit the back button before it finished loading.

You know what's even worse?

Google measures page load times and it's a big factor in their ranking algorithm. Google hates slow sites so much that they impose huge penalties on sites that don't load fast enough.

So if your site is slow, you're going to get a lot less traffic from search engines, and people who get there anyways are probably going to get impatient and leave.

Two days ago, I laid out the reasons why WordPress is the best site builder in the world, and you can read a million articles online that tell you the same thing.

But it's a lot harder to find the best place to host your WordPress site.

Search around and you'll see a lot of options for "self-hosting" WordPress, and this is where a lot of people make a big mistake.

Because not all WordPress hosts are created equal. In fact, many are downright bad.

You know how airlines overbook flights to make more money? Well, most website hosts do the same thing with something called "shared hosting."

Which is another way of saying they put a huge number of accounts on a single server, and they all share that computer's resources.

And when you have hundreds of sites on a single shared server, that's a recipe for hundreds of slow sites.

Which brings me to the most important point I want to make today.

People often ask me "why should I host my site at WordPress.com?"

There are a lot of good reasons, including that fact that we handle all server and software updates for you, so you don't have to worry about making the same boneheaded mistake I told you about earlier.

My #1 reason for choosing WordPress.com is that it's BLAZING fast.

The server team here at WordPress.com is like a world-class pit crew at a Formula One race, and they are laser-focused on making ALL WordPress.com sites as fast as technologically possible.

Which means you'll never have to worry about the embarrassment, frustration, and Google penalties that come with slow load times.

My #2 reason for choosing WordPress.com is that every plan includes UNLIMITED traffic.

I've been building sites for a long time, and I've never seen a deal this good.

For as little as per month, you're entitled to unlimited traffic on a world-class web hosting infrastructure.

If you've shopped around at all, you know that the vast majority of hosts charge you more as your site traffic increases.

They lure you in with low initial prices, but before you know it, your hosting bill will be hundreds of dollars per month or more.

That will never happen at WordPress.com.

Oh, and did I mention that you'll also gain automatic and free access to our content delivery network ("CDN")? CDNs are specialized tools that help images load much faster and they're normally too expensive for small sites to use.

But you'll get access to our in-house CDN for free with any plan. It's one of the many reasons WordPress.com hosting is faster than any other host you'll find.

Frankly, you're not going to find a better value anywhere else.

All plans include a 30 day money-back guarantee, so you can try the upgraded site features for yourself risk-free.

Regards,
Don Lair
